New GREEN Construction Skills Operative Card

From 1st July 2014 the Green Construction Site Operative (CSO) card will no longer be issued.  There will be a new green CSCS card only available for people working in labouring occupations.

CSCS’ role is to provide a scheme for the construction industry that confirms site workers’ training and qualifications. Many site workers who are carrying out skilled occupations have been applying for the Green CSO card as the easiest route to gain access to construction sites. This makes it difficult for contractors to use CSCS cards as a reliable method of checking that site workers have the appropriate skills to work on construction sites safely and effectively. RIDDOR – Change from 6th April 2012

From 6th April 2012 subject to Parliamentary approval, RIDDOR’s over three day injury reporting will change. From then the trigger point will increase from over three days’ to over seven days’ incapacitation (not counting the day of the accident.

Incapacitation means that the worker is absent or is unable to do work that they would reasonably be expected to do as part of their normal work. Employers and others with responsibilities under RIDDOR must still keep a record of all over three day injuries, if the employer has to keep an accident book, then this record will be enough. CITB Increase Daily Attendance Allowance for Site Safety Plus courses.

The CITB has increased the daily attendance allowance for Site Safety Plus courses. The grant has been increased from £17.50 to £52.50 from the 1st October to the 31st March 2012. This effectively means that a company putting a candidate on to the SMSTS five day course, will receive £262.50 back in grants for the course. For the Site Safety Plus courses of SMSTS, SSTS, the one day Health and Safety Awareness and Refresher courses that PFP Safety Services deliver, it will make the courses half price for companies paying the CITB levy. CITB Construction Skills have now produced a new SSSTS Refresher Course. This one-day course is intended for first line managers who have supervisory responsibilities and now wish to update their skills and knowledge in line with current legislation and maintain their current certificate. HSE Cost Recovery

HSE consults on cost recovery from non-compliant businesses

The HSE has launched a three-month consultation on how it plans to recover costs for its interventions from businesses that fail to comply with health and safety laws.

As agreed with the Government earlier this year, the regulator will impose fees on companies where a material breach of the laws is discovered during an inspection or investigation. Those fees would apply up to the point where the HSE’s intervention in supporting the company in rectifying matters has concluded. READ MORE
